Polyester Perspective

Almost a lifetime ago, my dad was a school teacher and bus driver and I was a little freckle-faced girl wearing a plaid school uniform with a red snap tie. The knee highs made my legs itch and the polyester was less than glamourous! Sometimes I would get to ride Dad's after-school route with him. He would pull the big silver lever that opened the bus door and he would let me push the big red button that flapped open the stop sign on the side of the bus! Talk about hitting the big time -- I loved it. I smiled the whole time and glowed a super special glow!

This memory came to mind recently while I was reading in Exodus 14. If you are a Bible reading friend, you likely know the story well. Moses was spearheading the escape from Egypt when the whole crowd of them became sandwiched between the impossible swelling before them and enslavement enclosing behind. The perfect circumstance for God to show up BIG. Faithfully, He created a way to rescue them. Here's where I started laughing out loud, literally:

So Moses stretched out his hand over the sea and the sea returned to its normal state at daybreak...

Not seeing the funny part? Well, for me on that day of reading I saw again what a joke it is when we begin to feel we are vital to what God is accomplishing. Was Moses' hand super special and that's why the waters closed? Was his presence the important ingredient to getting God's work done? Um, no. God didn't need Moses to stretch his hand out so the water would close back up again. God could have completely handled that one on His own! And I'm pretty sure that truth wasn't lost on Moses.

The beauty comes from the truth that God invited Moses to take an active role in accomplishing something pretty big. Much like my dad allowing me to push that button on the school bus, it's not really about him needing me, but more about him wanting me. God has always been about the fellowship with us and helping us know how wonderful He is. We are just the kids in polyester along for the ride and invited to take part in what He's doing.

How are you getting to see God work right now?
